NAO Malta Hosts the 23rd Assembly of the INTOSAI Working Group on Environmental Auditing

Press Release

From 1 to 3 July 2025, the National Audit Office (NAO) will host the 23rd Assembly of the International Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI) Working Group on Environmental Auditing (WGEA). The INTOSAI WGEA plays a pivotal role in strengthening the capacity of Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) to conduct high-quality environmental audits across the globe.

The theme of this year’s Assembly, “Auditing Our Blue Planet”, focuses on pressing environmental challenges related to the marine environment and water scarcity, specifically, the impacts of drought and the availability of drinking water. Delegates will explore critical issues in conjunction with marine ecosystems, sustainable Mediterranean practices, water economics, drinking water resilience, and the climate water nexus.

The Assembly will be officially opened by Mr. Sami Yläoutinen, Auditor General of Finland and Chair of the INTOSAI WGEA, and Mr. Charles Deguara, Auditor General of Malta and host of the meeting. They will welcome 115 delegates from 46 SAIs representing countries worldwide.

The Hon. Miriam Dalli MP, Malta’s Minister for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleansing, delivered a keynote address, offering insights from Malta’s national perspective on the Assembly’s central themes.

Throughout the Assembly, keynote speakers and panellists from prominent international institutions will contribute to discussions, moderate sessions, and share their expertise. The programme also includes presentations by SAIs showcasing audit cases and practices from their respective countries.

On 2 July 2025, twelve interactive workshops will address key issues: marine pollution audits, innovative approaches to environmental reporting, climate-water nexus strategies, and capacity building for environmental auditing. The outcomes of these workshops will be discussed in a plenary session.

The final day of the Assembly, 3 July 2025, is dedicated to the INTOSAI WGEA Business Meeting. Key agenda items include a review of activities from 2023 to 2025, the launch of the 2026–2028 Work Plan, and the INTOSAI WGEA Award Ceremony. The event will conclude with the official handover of the WGEA Chairmanship from SAI Finland to SAI Thailand.
