The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Carmelo Abela, pays first official visit to the National Audit Office

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Carmelo Abela, accompanied by the Clerk to the House, Ms Eleanor Scerri, this morning paid his first official visit to the National Audit Office (NAO) in Floriana, where he was welcomed by the Auditor General, Mr Charles Deguara. Mr Deguara thanked the Hon Speaker for finding the time in his busy schedule to visit the Office and meet its staff.

During this visit, the Auditor General, accompanied by the Office’s senior management, delivered a brief presentation on the work carried out by this Constitutional Office focusing particularly on its core mission of providing assurance to Parliament, and eventually to our citizens, that public funds are being used in the best manner possible and in line with prevailing rules and regulations. He emphasised that throughout all its audit assignments, the Office’s main objective is to enhance good governance across the public sector.

In his address, the Hon Speaker stated that his first official visit to the NAO reflected the importance he attaches to the Office’s constitutional role and to the close institutional relationship between the NAO and Parliament. He emphasised that transparency, accountability and the proper stewardship of public funds are essential foundations of public trust and good governance. The Hon Speaker also expressed Parliament’s appreciation for the professionalism, independence and commitment demonstrated by the Auditor General and the Office’s staff in carrying out their duties, while underlining that the NAO’s work strengthens parliamentary scrutiny and contributes directly to a more responsible, effective and accountable public administration. The Hon Speaker also reminded the NAO staff of the importance of carrying out their duties with fairness and responsibility.

During this visit, the Auditor General formally presented the Hon Speaker with the NAO’s Annual Report and Financial Statements 2025. In essence, this extensive and informative Report provides a comprehensive overview of the Office’s main activities, achievements and financial performance over the year. It also highlights the key events, strategic initiatives and collaborative efforts undertaken. The Auditor General also conveyed his appreciation to the Editorial Team for its work on this publication.
