National Audit Office Malta hosts multilateral meeting of Supreme Audit Institutions

The National Audit Office (NAO) of Malta hosted a multilateral meeting on 18 March 2025, welcoming senior representatives from the Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) of North Macedonia, Poland, and Serbia. These foreign delegations were led by Mr Maksim Acevski, Auditor General of the State Audit Office of North Macedonia; Mr Marian Banaś, President of the Supreme Audit Office of Poland; and Ms Ljiljana Dimitrijevic, Council Member of the State Audit Institution of the Republic of Serbia. Auditor General Mr Charles Deguara, who chaired this meeting, Deputy Auditor General Mr Noel Camilleri, Assistant Auditor General for the Performance Audit Section Mr William Peplow, and Dr Rebecca Vassallo, Liaison Officer for International Affairs, represented the NAO.​​

The NAO officials and high-level representatives from the participating SAIs contributed to insightful discussions, reflecting a shared commitment to knowledge exchange and international cooperation in the field of public auditing. Participants explored emerging challenges and opportunities, including SAI independence, sustainability audits, stakeholder engagement, and preparedness for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

A series of presentations addressed current key audit priorities. SAI Poland examined SAI independence, presenting its experience with the SAI Independence Rapid Advocacy Mechanism (SIRAM) and its efforts to safeguard its institutional autonomy and uphold its constitutional mandate. NAO Malta highlighted the significance of sustainability audits, emphasising the integration of environmental, social and governance considerations in public sector auditing. SAI North Macedonia explored strategies for enhancing cooperation with stakeholders to improve the inclusiveness, reach and impact of audit reports. SAI Serbia discussed its assessment of the country’s preparedness to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, focusing on governance frameworks, policy alignment, and coordination mechanisms.

This meeting reinforced the value of collaboration among SAIs in strengthening governance and audit effectiveness, underscoring NAO Malta’s commitment to international partnerships and excellence in public sector auditing.
