Within the framework of the Contact Committee of the network of Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) of the European Union (EU), the National Audit Office (NAO) is hosting the 2018 Liaison Officers Meeting of this network on 10 and 11 May, 2018. The Meeting is being attended by 66 participants from the 28 EU Member State SAIs, the European Court of Auditors (ECA), as well as from EU Candidate and Potential Candidate Country SAIs who are attending this event as observers.
In his Welcome Address, the Auditor General, Charles Deguara, highlighted the key milestones of the National Audit Office throughout the years. He then went on to comment on the themes being discussed during this Meeting, which are meant to serve as preparation for the annual Contact Committee Meeting, made up of the EU Heads of SAIs, to be held later on this year in Croatia. He stated that the work of Liaison Officers is key to ensuring that current changes and developments within the EU, that are of particular interest to EU Member State SAIs, are brought to the attention of the SAIs to be then discussed at Heads of SAI level and acted upon.
The Opening Speech was then followed by an address by Mr Leo Brincat, the Maltese Member of the ECA, who spoke on how the ECA is aiming to become ‘future proof’. For this purpose, ECA has established a ‘Foresight Task Force’, of which he is a member. The purpose is to focus on, and prepare for, long-term future developments relevant to the ECA. He encouraged participants to undertake a similar approach and exchange their experiences with the ECA, within the limits of their autonomy.
Mr Brian Vella, Assistant Auditor General at the NAO and Chair of this Meeting then proceeded with the opening of the Agenda. Current activities and progress of the different Working Groups, Task Forces and Networks that fall under the Contact Committee Framework are being discussed. Decisions will also be taken on the various activities of the Working Groups, Task Forces and Networks, as well as on other decision proposals.
On 9 May 2018, the network of the EU Candidate and Potential Candidate County SAIs met to discuss current and planned audit activities of common interest to this network with the purpose of strengthening the audit processes of these SAIs. This Meeting was attended by 23 participants from the EU Candidate and Potential Candidate Country SAIs, two EU Member State SAIs, the ECA, as well as representatives from SIGMA – OECD.
